Is an AI receptionist worth it?

It depends on three numbers you already have: how many calls you miss, what a booked job is worth, and what share of callers become customers. If missed calls times conversion times job value is comfortably more than the cost of answering them, it is worth it. If not, it is not.

Most articles on this question are written by companies selling one, and they all assume the answer is yes. This one is too, but we would rather show you the arithmetic and let it disagree with us where it disagrees.

The math nobody selling to you will show you

Start with what you are already spending to make the phone ring. An analysis of 3,211 US home services search campaigns by LocaliQ put the average cost of a search lead at about $91, with HVAC around $45, plumbing around $52, and roofing around $79.

Then look at what happens when it rings. Industry call data puts roughly 27% of inbound calls to home services businesses in the unanswered column. So for many operators, a quarter of the leads they paid for reach a phone nobody picks up.

The value side is just as concrete. An analysis of over 60 million phone calls found home services phone leads convert at 46%, the highest of any industry in the study. Calls are not tire-kickers in this business. They are the closest thing to a sale you will ever get for free.

Put your own numbers in: missed calls per month, times your conversion rate, times your average job. That figure, against the monthly cost of never missing one, is the whole decision.

When it is clearly worth it

Three situations make the math lopsided:

High job values. A roofer missing two $12,000 jobs a year has paid for years of coverage. The bigger the ticket, the fewer misses it takes.

Emergency trades. A burst pipe or a dead furnace caller does not wait. They dial down the list until somebody answers, so a missed emergency call is usually a lost one, not a delayed one.

After-hours heavy trades. Industry call tracking data shows 25 to 40% of home services calls arrive outside business hours. If your trade skews that way, voicemail is your night receptionist, and fewer than 3% of callers pushed to voicemail leave a message.

When it is probably not worth it

Honesty earns its keep here.

If you get a handful of calls a week and you genuinely answer them all, you do not have a missed-call problem, and no software fixes a problem you do not have. If your work comes entirely from repeat clients and referrals who will text you anyway, the phone is not your bottleneck. And if your books are full for months and you do not want more work, missed calls are costing you jobs you could not take.

In those cases, keep your money. The math will still be here when your situation changes, usually the first busy season after you add a second crew.

What about just letting voicemail catch it?

Voicemail is where this plan usually falls apart. Fewer than 3% of callers pushed to voicemail leave a message. The other 97% hang up, and in a trade where the next company is one search result away, hanging up means calling them instead.

Voicemail does not save the lead. It records the silence after the lead left.

How to run the numbers on your own business

You need ten minutes and three numbers: calls missed per month, average job value, and roughly what share of callers book. If you do not know your miss rate, your phone system's call log will show calls with zero talk time, or you can start from the industry's 27% and adjust.

The savings calculator does the arithmetic for you, and this walkthrough of what a missed call costs shows the formula worked through. If you are comparing answering options first, an answering service and an AI receptionist solve different problems, and there is an honest look at where AI answering still fails.
